Second Harvest Food Drive 2011

WHAT: Rollins College is participating in Helping Hands Across America to collect food for the Central Florida community. The Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida is a private, nonprofit organization that collects, stores and distributes donated food to more than 500 partner agencies in six Central Florida counties: Brevard, Lake, Orange, Osceola, Seminole and Volusia.

WHEN: October 17 - November 11

HOW YOU CAN HELP:

  • DONATE non-perishable food items (critical needs include: meals in a can, oatmeal, canned tuna, nonfat dry milk, peanut butter, dry beans, nutritional drinks, canned meats, evaporated milk, canned veggies, canned soup, pasta, canned fruit, rice, beef stew, baby food) at various locations around campus
  • Make a financial contribution
DROP-OFF: Boxes are set up in the Crummer Student Lounge through November 11. We will also collect cans on Friday, November 4 at the Crummer Social.

  • Yes, last year we distributed more than 24 million pounds of grocery product, the equivalent of more than 17 million meals.  Approximately 1 in 5 of our population—732,000 people—needed food assistance in Central Florida last year.  This is a 152% increase from 2006.
Who is hungry in Central Florida?
  • 47% of clients served are children.
  • 20% of the households served have at least one member age 65 or older.
  • 33% of households served have at least one working adult.
 How does Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida serve the hungry?
  • Through a variety of programs including:
  • Collection & Distribution of Food
  • Food Stamp application assistance
  • Childhood Hunger -  Hi-Five Kids Pack, Kid’s CafĂ©
  • Second Helpings – Prepared and Perishable Food
  • Fresh Produce
  • Disaster Relief
 What area does Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida serve?
  • We directly serve the Central Florida area including Brevard, Lake, Orange, Osceola, Seminole and Volusia counties.
 How efficient is Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida?
  • For every $1 donated, up to $9 worth of grocery product is provided to those in need.
  • 96% of every dollar goes straight to feeding people.
 Does Second Harvest Food Bank need volunteers?
Yes, we rely on the generosity of thousands of volunteers each year. Last year over 8,000 volunteers contributed 31,000 hours of service.
